How hard is it to remove the spare tire off the Liberty?

My friend had his stolen! I thought they were locked on. And why would Jeep place the tire on the hatchback anyway. I hear 2008 Liberty does not have the spare attached to the hatch…

   They are locked on from the factory but the lock is not that hard to get off.They installed the spare on the swing gate so you have more interior space.The new 2008 spare is under the vehicle. TERRY H
