I know they can’t be in carry-ons, but I’m trying to find out if I can pack tire chains in my checked luggage upon an airplane. I can’t find anything about it on TSA’s website, so I assume I can, but thought maybe I could confirm it with someone who would know for sure?

Absolutely - You can pack just about anything in your checked luggage as long as it is not hazmat (hazardous materials - anything that’s flammable, explosive, emits vapors, etc.) Chains are definitely not hazardous.

Just watch the weight - most airlines will charge an extra fee for any piece of checked luggage weighing more than 50 pounds. This policy varies between airlines, so check your airline’s website under “baggage information” to get the exact limitation and fee schedule. Coffeebuzz

There would be no problems with tire chains in checked bags. Just be careful of the weight limits, or you will be charged extra. VT in an AM handbasket ™

You shouldn’t have a problem with packing them in your checked luggage. I know the TSA has a 800 line as well as an email address to ask particular questions:

For questions or concerns about Travel Tips, Permitted and Prohibited Items, and information on filing a claim for lost, stolen or damaged items, please call the TSA Contact Center.
