Any effect of running one slightly thinner tire than the other 3?
Drag_The_Waters asked:
My tires are 265/75/16. I have one that is badly warped and I need it replaced quick. The only one I’ve found right away is a 245/75/16…I drive a 4×4 SUV (full-size) and the tire that needs replaced is the front driver side. Will running a 20mm thinner tire pose any risk? I only need to drive 1500 miles before I will replace all 4. Thanks!
Well to me, 20mm difference is nothing. I wonder, visibly, if it will even be noticeable. I’m questioning whether it poses any danger risk or will potentially damage the other tires or mess up anything in the suspension, steering etc. I’m not an automotive expert and definitely not a tire expert.
I should also note the tire is a different brand, but like my current tires, is LT rated for mud and snow.
I do have a full-size spare as an option as well…I’m not sure of the exact size.

Thinner is not such a big issue. The problem with this tire is that it’s not the same diameter as the other 3. It’s 30mm smaller in diameter. This will cause more problems than the width.
You didn’t mention what you drive, but I think mechanically it’s probably not going to break anything. I do think your ABS will fail, but that’s okay with me. In terms of the handling, I can’t say I ever tried it. It’ll certainly upset the handling in some way. Firebird
This is not ideal but if you are only talking about 1500 miles you should be ok .. the spare “donut” type of tire is always smaller than a full size tire and it’s ok …If you do have a choice I would put it on the rear and put one of the other tires on the front… MeInUSA
Get the new tire as soon as you can, it won’t hurt the vehicle, but might set an ABS trouble code you would have to get cleared later. DO NOT put your vehicle in 4×4 lock or 4×4 mode with the mismatched tires on it. done wrenching
